Uniting for a society free of hunger and violence

Dharma Into Action Foundation (DhIA) invites you to join "WeAreOne" Campaign to build a society free of hunger and violence. The campaign centers around Mahatma Gandhi's 154th birth Anniversary on October 2nd, 2023. Gandhi led a non-violent independence movement in India, which inspired Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's work on civil rights and immigrant rights that directly drove the dramatic growth of the Indian diaspora in the United States.

How we are taking action

DhlA is partnering with Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached, and Sri Siva Vishnu Temple in the DC-Metro area to lead WeAreOne.

We are organizing activities for the week of October 1-8, 2023, to address hunger and violence. Activities will include food drives, educational initiatives, health awareness campaigns, mental health clinics, mindfulness and meditation events, and skill development workshops.

Why “WeAreOne” Matters?

The need to take action on hunger and violence in the US is clear.

  • 10% of US households were food insecure in 2021 and income inequality has increased and is now greater than in peer countries.

  • Violence and self-harm using guns have increased. A record 48,830 gun deaths in 2021 reflects a 23% increase since 2019. Gun deaths among children and teens rose by 50%.

WeAreOne is a coalition of organizations taking on this challenge in a secular, non-partisan way.

How history inspires us

Indian Americans and African Americans have a shared history of confronting discrimination together. Dr. King, Jr. was inspired by Gandhi's non-violent struggle for liberation, and his adoption of Gandhi's non-violent methods both fueled the US civil rights movement and led to the Hart-Celler Act of 1965, which allowed for the growth of the Indian diaspora in the United States. Our connected history shows that non-violent efforts transcend all boundaries. WeAreOne builds on its legacy to tackle today's hunger and violence challenges in the US.
